Maritime innovation leads to environmental award

NCE Maritime CleanTech has been awarded Hordaland County's annual environmental award “Miljøprisen”. The cluster receives the award for its work on the worlds first battery powered ferry.

Hege Økland, CEO of NCE Maritime CleanTech, received the award and the prize money of 50 000 NOK on behalf of the cluster. She stated that she hope that this award will be a symbol for further work on new technology with zero emissions.

We focus on achieving climate-friendly solutions. It is especially nice that we get this award from the region and county that is our host. We aim to help Hordaland County develop into a environmentally friendly county, Økland stated at the ceremony.

NCE Maritime CleanTech receives «Miljøprisen 2014» based on its contribution into developing the world first cordless ferries. The ferries are operating the distance between Lavik-Oppedal and Jektevik-Tysnes on the west coast of Norway.

The work this cluster execute is very exciting for a region with many ferries. They have contributed to develop the first battery powered ferry in the world, and have also launched hybrid solutions for ships. It is of great importance to limit pollution in the future. We believe that NCE Maritime CleanTech contributes to this and that is why they deserve this year’s award, stated Anne-Beth Njærheim, Chairman for the Committee for Culture, Resources and Environmental issues in Hordaland County.

NCE Maritime CleanTech is a networking organization as it collaborate with partners all over the maritime value chain, vendors of renewable energy, and research and development institutions. Last year the cluster received status as a Centre of Expertise (NCE). Only the most dynamic and growth-oriented clusters share this status.
